Western Walkabout: About A Cat
Richard Harris tells of his cat Mehitabel, a most engaging creature.
My cat, Mehitabel, is now an old lady, aged 13, and her territory has started to collapse.
Various riff raff from homes nearby jump over the garden fence to invade her space.
She hisses and fizzes at them through the window and lets out these ear-splitting howls. This engages my support and I have to go out and chase them away- somebody else’s moggie, wearing a tinkly bell.
My cat blinks her eyes at me in thanks, rubs herself against my leg and asks if there’s any food? Gourmet kangaroo steak will be good, sliced thinly, please.
Over the years the cat has learnt to manipulate me. She owns me and expects me to perform to her requirements.
I was thinking about maybe getting a dog next time but I understand these are more trouble and just as insubordinate and disobedient.
