Frost, stepping ahead of my dreams,
was waiting on the hedgerow.
Too soon. Low winter sunbright scaring
the golden leaves of autumn.
Crinkled and crackling under foot,
a haunted footfall, no harmony
was waiting in the dawn light.
Berries on the holly: red. Warning.
Stock the larder. Darn the fingers of
last year’s gloves.
