The new millennium saw me visiting Spain again, this time accompanied by Mary. Travelling with Bolero, a wing of the European Bike Express, we set up camp under canvas at Parafrugell on the Costa Brava. After ten days we set off for the Beresford's house in Martissan. A pleasant ride up the coast to the French border was followed by a visit to the walled city of Carcassone before landing at the door of our exiled hosts in the quiet village they had chosen to live out their lives.
We returned to the area again in 2003, again with Bolero to their new camp site at Empuriabrava. A number of very attractive day rides were discovered. I subsequently drew up route maps of these rides for the benefit of other cyclists.
During the same year we enjoyed the wonderful warm and dry summer at the New Forest Week, immediately followed by the CTC Birthday Rides in Dorset. The latter provided us with an insight into the worlds of Thomas Hardy and Lawrence of Arabia. Together with a long weekend in Hull where we pedalled our tandem down to Spurn Point the year provided us with much interesting and inspired cycling. Awheel in 2003 was as enjoyable for me as it had been fifty years before. Returning to Empuriabrava in 2004 I received two free holidays for Mary and myself as reward for designing the cycling routes.
