For decades I've had a sign on the roof that read "Suckers live here. Please apply''. It was visible to strays only.
I loved your story, Ellen and totally related to it. As for your homeless man, in similar situations,once the money has dropped into that hat, what's done with it is no longer my business. Sometimes I have offered to buy a meal for people rather than give money. Most people are happy for me to do it.
