Open Features: National Trust Walks

Sally Airey suggests that you jump-start your New Year with a walk through National Trust places to burn off those Christmas calories. There are many frosty landscapes across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, waiting to be explored.

Here’s a selection of events on offer in late 2010 and early 2011:

Attingham Park, Shropshire

Boxing Day Walk, 26 December 11am - 1pm

Burn off your Christmas excesses with a walk across the Attingham estate. Grounds will be open to walkers until dusk.

Normal admission charges apply plus there is an event charge of £6 per adult and £3 per child.

Kedleston Hall, Derbyshire

Boxing Day Walk, 26 December 10am - 1pm

Explore Kedleston with a six mile walk around the park followed by soup and sandwiches in the Restaurant.

Quarry Bank Mill and Styal Estate, Cheshire
Boxing Day walks, 26 December 10am - 12pm and 2pm – 4pm

Walk off the turkey on the Styal Estate, through the riverside, farmland and woodland in the valley of the River Bollin.

Ashridge Christmas Walk, 27 December 10am -

Enjoy a scenic post-Christmas walk through the Estate at this magical time of year. There will be mulled wine and mince pies at the Visitor Centre afterwards.

Castle Drogo, Devon

Wind Down and Warm Up, 27 December – 02 January 11am – 4pm

Relax after Christmas with a walk in the fresh air of the Drogo Gardens and Estate, recharge your batteries in our café and indulge in some retail therapy away from the crowds in our shop! Make a New Year’s resolution and add it to our resolution tree. Children can also follow our trail around the gardens and grounds to discover the extreme activities some people take part in order to 'Wind Down and Warm Up'.

Normal admission charges apply plus there is an additional charge of £1.50 per child per trail, which includes a prize.

New Year, New You; 1 – 31 January

Looking to get fit for the New Year? Take the Nymans exercise trail around the garden all month, ask about our fitness walks, and take part in a light 30 minute personal training taster session from the Sussex Boot Camps team. The sessions are at 11am every Tuesday and Thursday during January - just turn up in whatever clothes you’re wearing and grab some free stretching exercises. No trainers required!
