Western Walkabout: Precious Moments In A Day
In the precious moments of the day Richard Harris hears a remarkable life story.
At that time of the morning when I first wake up, it could be between 5 and 6 am, I find myself thinking will I get up now? Why?
So I switch on the national radio and listen to whatever is going. One morning recently I tuned in to Verbatim, a program about a woman magistrate in her 70s who had been diabetic since the age of 13.
Hers was an amazing story of fortitude and grit, and how she accepted the diabetes, put the controls in order and went along with her life.
After a disastrous first pregnancy, when her general doctor, who knew little about diabetes, let her go full term, she lost the baby and nearly died. She recovered, her marriage didn’t, so she went back to live with Mum and Dad, got a job with a legal firm, studied to be a lawyer, then became a magistrate and adopted eight children.
A truly remarkable person. What an inspiration. I heard about her during those precious moments in my day when I had the good sense to stay in bed rather than get up and water the garden and those etcetera duties of daily life..
