Letter From America: A Wanted Man
Ronnie Bray tells of a handcuffed man, and a policeman who has every good reason to blush.
Eric Mitchell Lair, a convicted sex offender, is a wanted man with a price on his head. The price is $29, which is ₤20.
Lair was arrested on a warrant after failing to report to his probation officer in Yakima County, Washington State. Once apprehended he was handcuffed, and put into a Police car to be taken to prison.
To the embarrassment of the officer concerned, the felon kicked open the cage and car door even with his hands cuffed behind his back, and ran off. The car was travelling about 15 mph at the time, and Lair was reported as running away at about 100 mph, apparently too fast for the pursuing policeman.
Hardly the crime of the century, but possibly the embarrassment of the year for the officer that failed to set the door locks so they could not be opened, failed to watch his prisoner, failed to prevent his escape, and then failed to overtake him as he ran away.
When he is captured, Lair will face an additional charge of the theft of a pair of handcuffs valued at $29.00 dollars.
