A Lovely Shade Of Blue: Moving On After Unfairness
Claire George offers comfort to those who have been treated unfairly.
Everyone knows what it's like to be treated unfairly. It doesn't feel nice and can leave a bad memory that lasts for a very long time.
It's important not to forget how we feel when a person or organisation is unfair to us. Those negative feelings teach us why it is important to be kind. When we know how bad unfairness feels, we try harder to avoid inflicting it on others.
Yet, we also have to be careful not to become bitter. Sour feelings can hurt us more than the original incident. They make us angry, stop us from thinking clearly and sometimes cause us to harm others.
God is with all of us, constantly, in our daily lives. When we are suffering from bitter and angry feelings it is good to tell God about them. God understands each one of us. He knows the paths we must take to get our feelings back in balance.
If you can't find the words to speak to God, you could simply think about what happened and say: "God, I give my memory to you, please help me to stop hurting myself with angry feelings. Amen."
Or you could try using the words of this simple prayer:
Dear God,
I can’t forget what happened to me.
The memory makes me angry.
Sometimes I behave angrily when I see things that remind me.
I don’t want to feel like this any longer.
God, help me to remember that you are always by my side.
Help me to understand that even though I cannot see you,
you truly love me, and you are my friend.
From now on God, when I feel angry about what happened,
I promise to reach out to you in my mind and hold your hand.
It may be difficult to move on with my life,
but I can do it with you by my side.
Please help me to remember you every day.
AMEN
