About Our Words: School Bullies

Michael Hanzuk associated with Betty McKay's account of standing up to school bullies.

Thank you for the wonderful story. It reminded me of my first day of school. Since the school system worked on the yearly calendar I started school when I was four years old because my birthday was in November.

Being a bright eyed and bushy tailed boy because I too was born on a Sunday the school bullies went after me the very first day. I saw them talking together to choose which one was the one supposedly to beat me up. So the red headed boy was chosen and sure enough the fight started right in front of the school.

It ended when the red haired boy landed on top of me. Somehow I managed to get by feet underneath him and lifted him up into the air. He started to cry and jumped off me. From that day on the school children left me alone. So I guess strong legs do help and I have been an avid walker all my life.

Your mother and the school were right. You have to stand up to the bullies or they will try to control you forever.
