A Lovely Shade Of Blue: Why Does My Friend Oppose My Faith?

Claire George reminds Christians of why so many people are opposed to their faith.

What do you do when a friend fiercely objects to your beliefs? As a Christian you should try to see their point of view so that discussions do not become arguments. Let’s look at the reasons why your friend might oppose your faith.

"The church is a bully"

For centuries in Europe there was violence between people who followed different forms of Christianity. History documentaries often focus on abuses within the church rather than the good it did. This might be all your friend knows about the church.

"The church is too conservative for me"

It is well known that many churches oppose Gays, sex before marriage, women in leadership, women priests and contraception. Your friend may be a liberal who thinks that all Christians share these beliefs and who finds them to be very objectionable.

"The physical world is all there is"

Some folk strongly believe the physical world is all there is. It requires a lot of thought before they can be open to God.

"Disappointed by experiences of church"

People decide Christianity is a lie when they see unchristian behaviour in congregations and among the clergy.

"Feeling let down by God"

When bad things happen, some people lose their faith because they feel that the loving God described by Christians does not exist.

"Church looks difficult and boring"

If your friend has literacy difficulties they may feel uncomfortable with the amount of reading required by some churches. Conditions such as ADHD and Autism can make it difficult to sit still for a whole service.

"I don't want to be a Jesus freak"

Christian teachings go against mainstream culture and Christians are seen as different. Your friend may want to come to church but may think it is not cool.
