A Lovely Shade Of Blue: Transendence
"Transcendence is a long word but it is easy to understand. It is the feeling that there is something beyond the physical world,'' writes Claire George.
For some people faith in God begins with feelings of transcendence. Most people can feel transcendence, even if they think that all religion is wrong. Many non-religious folk feel it and think it occurs because they are tired, drunk or too imaginative.
Transcendence is a long word but it is easy to understand. It is the feeling that there is something beyond the physical world.
It may be a sense of peace, calm, gentleness, love or joy that seems to come from somewhere else. It could be a deep awareness that the world is glorious and beautiful. It can also be a strong sense that all humans are connected by love.
Christians believe these feelings are part of God’s relationship with us.
We all experience transcendence in different ways. Each person has a relationship with God that is completely unique. Many people do not have strong feelings, but still have a sense that God is with them.
There are lots of styles of church in this world because we are all so different!
If you want to find transcendence you need to know what situations make you feel comfortable. If you love being with people you might find transcendence sitting around a dinner table. If you prefer peace and quiet you will have better luck looking for it on a beach or alone in your garden.
