About Our Words: Recalling Ruby Murray

Alan Markland from Wigan was prompted by an article by Ellen Warner into recalling a night when singer Ruby Murray break down in tears on stage.

Alan writes:

I remember seeing Ruby Murray being brought on stage by Josef Locke in about 1955. He told us he wasn't the great Irish Tenor but we all knew he had trouble with the Inland Revenue people so we kept our mouths shut while he introduced this slip of a girl who promptly broke down in tears at the sight of us.

Josef took her off and came back to scold us for giving her a hard time. When she came back on she brought the house down of course. Years later Ruby owned a pub near where I was living in Malta. She spent her time on the customer side of the bar and had a voice like Louis Armstrong. I told her of my recollection of her at the Grand and her breaking down in tears and she said: 'Eee! we did it every night love - it was all part of the act!.'
