About Our Words: A Truby King Baby

Pamela from London says she realises how damaged she was in childhood by being raised according to the advice of Dr Truby King, a New Zealander who believed and taught that babies should be treated and reared on the same strict regime that worked with farm animals, calves in particular.

Pamela writes:

I was born in 1933 and my mother used to tell me with some pride that I was "a Truby King baby".

I was also her first child and have always found relationships difficult, few friends, unpopular as a child etc. I have always been a perfectionist, which is very inhibiting.

Now I am elderly and a grandmother and feel that my life has always been overshadowed by a sort of depression and resignation and lack of firm personality. My sister, 8 years younger, had a normal upbringing, plenty of hugs and cuddles (I was jealous of her) is quite different, outgoing, friendly, casual, and loves company.

Watching my baby grandchildren develop and realising how terribly sensitive little children are, I am realising more and more how damaged I was in my infanthood.
