About Our Words: Death At Sea
Anna Barratt from Blackpool, Lancashire, prompted by an episode of Robert Owen's autobiography, seeks information on where a her great, great grandfather, a Master Mariner, died when his shop foundered.
Anna writes:
I was born in South Shields, a busy market town in the '50's.
My great, great grandfather was Jacob Jary whose death was recorded in the local newpaper The Shields Gazette as being 21.11.1859 when the Brig Emily foundered.
My great, great grandfather was a Master Mariner. Despite many searches I am unable to find where the brig foundered and how he died.
He had been born in Norfolk around 1820 and had married an Elizabeth Walker in 1845. He travelled up the east coast first stopping off and residing in Grimsby and eventually ending up in South Shields. Can anyone out there enlighten me as to what happened to him?
