Rock And Roll

...I’m remembering how and why I began to enjoy sailing. It was never love at first jibe. A night watch was spent surrounded by lightening scratching its neon graffiti all around like Piccadilly Circus on amphetamines. I cannot see such displays at home, more startling than any Bonfire Night show.

We caught Dorado, watched dolphins, saw a turtle, chewed the fat, put up sails, took them down. It was a good trip...

Richard Donkin goes sailing in the Med.

Whatever happened To Tetley Bitter?

...There was a consistency about the ale in those Leeds pubs not far from the brewery. They used to say that good beer didn’t travel well. It didn’t have far to travel then. It didn’t sit about in the barrels either and certainly not in the glass. A few gulps would see to that...

A Woman Of Substance

"Margaret Thatcher was a hard working, conviction politician, flawed, as they all are, who put service beyond her family. She was no ordinary woman, no ordinary individual. Where Are The Sledges?

...We'd come home with chapped legs and raw knees - yes we sledged in short pants - all rosy cheeked and ready for the stew and dumplings that our mothers knew we needed. "Sithee 'ere, these'll stick to your ribs," my Auntie Joyce would say, thrusting a hot bowl of stew under our noses and we'd wolf it down and get back out in the snow...

Richard Donkin would not swap his childhood for the "indoor'' lives of today's children.

Last Of The Summer Whine

...One thing that struck me straight away was just how normal they all were. Peter Sallis who played Clegg and Brian Wilde who played Foggy Dewhurst were particularly engaging, moaning quite a bit about the lot of the jobbing actor; because that is what they were before their new found fame and security in a hit comedy series.

Bill Owen was friendly enough but he was in and out of the caravan talking to his agent about various supermarket openings. He loved the recognition he found in the local community and was perhaps the most star struck of the three, but not in the way we might think of that term today...

Richard Donkin recalls the day he interviewed the Summer Wine stars.

Porridge By Candlelight

...But last night it snowed a lot and this morning we had a power cut. Cooking porridge on the gas by the light of a candle at 6.30 am, unable to get the car out of the drive, there was little else to do but ponder on the things we take for granted...

Britain's harsh winter leads Richard Donkin to contemplate the future.

Mud Pies And Mucky Fat

...We called them auntie Annie and auntie Hilda. I don't know their histories but they were part of that generation that lost so many boyfriends and husbands during the First World War.

On the wall of their house they had an old whip - a cat-o-nine-tails - and its presence was used as a reminder of its terrible potential for inflicting punishment on naughty children. I suppose nuclear weapons have the same value today on a larger scale...

Richard Donkin, recalling his childhood, is in full agreement with the findings of a recent report - dirt is good for you.

A Call To Arms

...Blowing up tanks and mowing down troops, on the other hand, was perfectly acceptable. I had a green rug by my bed which made a perfect battlefield. While my armies were capable of inflicting serious casualties on each other it was nothing to the mayhem my mother could reek with her feet as she made the bed...

Richard Donkin reflects upon the fact that young men still love war.

Tea Cosy Telephone

...They put me through to the nuisance calls service, probably because they know a nuisance call when they get one. A man there told me that we had been the victims of a "silent call". These are calls from automated diallers in call centres that for some reason do not hook you up with the caller (probably the callers have more sense than to pick up the phone). Something For The Weekend

...I do think there is a link between Islamic intolerance and Western moral decline. Every terrible outrage demands that we hold a mirror to our own behaviours, actions and beliefs...

Richard Donkin comments on the deplorable lack of taste in a BBC programme, yet another example of the weakening values which have created a moral vacuum in Western society.

Nothing Like A Good Clear Out

...We've had two of everything for a while. It's when you start to get three of everything that you know you're in trouble. A third vacuum cleaner arrived in midweek from our next door neighbour who is moving to Switzerland. It's a great vac so it was out with my dad's old upright....

But Richard Donkin hates to throw away anything that is still serviceable.

Richard broaches an idea that is so sound and sensible the “authorities’’ will inevitably ignore it.
