Poetry Pleases: Canoe Song

"You make me feel like straying out in the wilderness as wild things do...'' Merle Parkin writes a tribute to an old canoe.

You make me feel like leaving
All of the things that irk and irritate,
Into the distance weaving
Ripples, where peace and glistening gum-trees wait.

You make me feel like going
Out to some moon-washed clearing by the stream,
Where the wild birds come, knowing
Friendship, and life wafts oer me like a dream.

You make me feel like taking
All the glad birdsong of a river shore,
When golden dawn is breaking,
And holding it in my heart forever more.

You make me feel like straying
Out in the wilderness as wild things do,
Wanderlust wish obeying,
You make me feel so free, my old canoe.
