U3A Writing: Alf

Joan Semmler reveals that after the brandy had been drunk the question was repeated.

“Hello, May. Have you got a brandy?” asked my dad’s shy cousin Alf, in his usual quiet monotone voice.

Knowing he had recently been ill, my mother said, “Sit down, Alf,” and rushed inside, emerging soon after with a glass. Alf brightened up considerably when Mum handed it to him.

“Good health to you, May,” he said and downed the brandy.

As he handed back the glass to my hard-of-hearing mother, he said, “Have you got a bran bag, May?”
