U3A Writing: Post Cards From Space

...There was a time
I was your universe,
The steady centre of your life...

So says Norman Hodghton's poem. But now there are only post cards...

They are my only link to you,
Your post cards,
Which fall each week upon the mat.
I need some space
To find myself
, you said.
And so I let you go
To find that space
Your restless soul desired.

My fingers trace your written words
And try to build a bridge across the miles.
You tell me now of places seen,
Of rivers crossed and mountains climbed,
But never speak of love or loss,
Or how I manage here alone.
Yet still in vain I try to read
Between your neat handwritten lines.

There was a time
I was your universe,
The steady centre of your life.
But deep unease now grips my heart
As comet-like you trace a route
Far beyond familiar stars.

But will you one day
Come rushing back
From some distant point in outer space?
And will I know you if you do?
