Bonzer Words!: Yellow Pansies

Frank Dawson's touching poem tells of a time when flowers came before bread.

Frank writes for Bonzer! magazine. Please do visit www.bonzer.org.au

She stood long at the kiosk
with its display of bright flowers.
She was bent and old.
She needed a loaf of bread
but did not have enough change
for bread and flowers too.
When she came out of the store,
she had bought yellow pansies.
She would go to the nursing home
to visit her husband of sixty-odd years,
praying for a little recognition
that he might remember
when he gave her yellow pansies
in another time,
at another place,
when they were young and in love.
