..."Tha'd better get thissen wrapped up. It saands as if it's rainin' rarely," sed yar Ethel as Ah gate mi cap an' coit on...

In this week's dialect tale Mike Shaw tells of a curious incident on a windy night after a domino game down at the club.

Ah stirred missen fra t' fahresahde last Frahday abaat eight o' clock cos four on us daan at t' club 'ad arranged ter laike a game o' doms.

"Tha'd better get thissen wrapped up. It saands as if it's rainin' rarely," sed yar Ethel as Ah gate mi cap an' coit on.

"Well, we can do wi' awl t' rain we can get ter fill t' reservoys," Ah replahd. "Onnyrooad, Ah'm nooan baan ter melt ner nowt."

But as Ah shut t' garden gate behand me an' set off daan t' rooad Ah fun aat wat Ethel meant. T' rain wer comin' daan 'orizontal an' t' wind ommost blew mi cap off twahce afooar Ah gate ter t' club.

We 'ad a reight gooid neet on t' doms booard, wi' Jack Bamforth an' me just lickin' Jooa Sykes an' Edwin Walker. It wer awl daan ter t' last 'and o' t' neet, an' Ah wer fair chuffed wen Ah won t' match wi' t' double six of awl doms.

Wen we gate ter t' dooar an' looked aat, Ah could see it wer rainin' an' blowin' 'arder ner ivver.

"Nivver mahnd, Ah've getten mi umbrella sooa thee an' Jack can get unda wi' me seein' as we're awl gooin' t' same rooad," sed Jooa.

"Ah reckon yar Melvyn an' 'is family knew wat they wer dooin' wen they went aat ter Majorca yesterday fer a couple o' weeks," 'e added, puttin' up 'is brolly.

"It in't fit ter turn a dog aat, but we'd better get off or else yar Ethel ull be chunterin' an' reight," Ah sed.

Well, we'd nobbut gooan a cock strahde wen this bloomin' gret gust o' wind blew t' brolly insahde aat. Jooa nobbut weighs nahne stooan weet through, an' wen 'e clung onta t' brolly it lifted 'im cleean off 'is feet.

E wer bloomin' lucky 'at Ah just managed ter grab 'old on 'is leg an' bring 'im back daan ter earth.

"By gum, Jooa lad, that wer a narra squeak," Ah chuckled. "If Ah 'adn't copped thi, tha maht 'a surprahsed your Melvyn bi turnin' up i' Majorca!"
