Poetry Pleases: Flight Path

Meryl Nickels's poem conveys the sheer incredibility of high speed flight.

Row on row we sit
Strapped to our seats
Like galley slaves
Urging the ship
at fast forward
Across the monitor
Where it hovers
Over a world
of virtual reality.

Asian butterfly
Flits the aisles,
Winged brows raised
above almond eyes.
She alights close by
She inclines
Her slender neck
Towards me.
Her fluttering hands
Seeking to soothe.
Her tilted smile
Invites me to accept
A chalice of nectar.

Tranquil now
I focus
My galley-slave mind
On the tiny plane
Crossing time and space
At supersonic speed
Yet on the screen
Hardly seeming to move.
