Poetry Pleases: Hail

Brian Jenkisonís poem recalls the bright angel who guided the wise men to Bethlehem.

Hail Earendel,
Bright angel of the star,
Who led the magi from afar
To read your message by their skill,
And journey on for many days
Across hot, trackless, desert ways
To that blest town upon a hill.

And there you stayed
Above the holy place
Wherein that Lady, full of grace,
Cradling her Child upon her knee,
Received for him gifts made to her
Of gold and frankincense and myrrh
Brought thither by the kingly three.

Bright Earendel,
Reveal to us your light
That, filled with wonder at the sight,
With the wise magi we may dare
To follow you and so, like them,
At last may find our Bethlehem
And kneel to pay our homage there.
