North American Dreaming: The Torch

One cannot continue to hate
without it turning in on itself,
and destroying the fibers of the soul.

Here's a heart-felt message for a troubled world from poet William Burkholder.

Common platitudes,
dripping off ignorant lips.

Diatribes of fungal banter
infecting my ears and making them bleed.

No future can ever be born of anger...
save for that of more anger.

One cannot continue to hate
without it turning in on itself,
and destroying the fibers of the soul.

Hate destroys men.
It chews them up and spits them out.
Its hunger never satisfied.

Feeding on ignorance,
feeding on fear,
feeding on despair and creating more of it.

Its enemy, wisdom,
Its enemy, the light of peace.

That torch burning brightly,
this light, within our reach.

Hands and fingers feeling,
enlightenment's glorious warmth.

There's a place around the fire,
each has a home upon this hearth.
