Open Features: Emma Albani

Peter Wintersgill tells us something of the singer Emma Albani who made her Covent Garden debut in 1872.

Born
1 November, 1847, in Chambly, near Montreal.

Childhood
Was spent in Albany, New York, from which city she took her stage name.

Adolescence
She studied in Paris & Milan.

Adult life
She made her debut in Messina in 1870 in La Somnambula and her Covent Garden debut in 1872 as Amina. She was the first Desdemona at the New York Met in 1890 and sang Isolde at Covent Garden in 1896, retiring from stage life a month later. She continued to sing in oratorio until her retirement in 1911.

Emma Albani was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1925.

She died on 3 April, 1930, in London
