North American Dreaming: Peace Be To You Great Warriors

...In a marble garden,
Too many names to count...

William Burkholder honours those who gave their lives for their country.

Monuments to freedom,
For the dead,
The living need them,
Trumpeting bands,
On a twilight evening,
Serenading our guilt,
Rows of stone,
In a marble garden,
Too many names to count,
For flag and country,
We owe our thanks,
To the boys ,
The men,
That they could have become,
When war came knocking,
We sent them away,
From their mothers,
Their games,
Their boyish play,
We raise statue,
We raise stone,
To mask the breaking,
Of their bones,
To mask the breaking,
Of their homes.
Peace be to you great warriors,
Your watch,
Your duty is done.
