North American Dreaming: Victory!

William Burkholder's poem emphasises that victory is not won by force of arms.

When the eagle of war flys
Talons sharpened against enemy steel,
We all lose a piece of who and what we are.

When the fog of war
Wafting over bloody fields clears,
We find our brothers lying dead and maimed,

And we all lose a piece of who and what we are.

So the victory is not in winning the battle,
It lies in never having fought it to begin with
Discourse and engagement of human kind,

Finding life's dynamic that makes us all one
We will gain so much more
In understanding who and what we are.
Victory then,
For all.
