Adolescence
She began as an actress in 1937, then had vocal training in Milan and Salzburg.

Adult life
Her debut was in Lucerne 1940.

She had success in Menotti's The Consul in Lucerne in 1952.

She made her US debut in San Francisco 1953 and her London one in 1955 in a concert performance of Elektra. Her Covent Garden debut was in 1959 in Salome. She is reonwned for dramatic Strauss roles and for Verdi' s Lady Macbeth.
