Peter Wintersgill tells of Maria Caradori Allan, the soprano soloist in the first London performance of Beethoven's Ninth symphony.

1800 in Milan.

Adult life
London debut 1825. Was soprano soloist in the first London performance of Beethoven's Ninth symphony in 1825 and in the first performance of Elijah in Birmingham in 1846.

She was a duetist with Maria Malibran at the Manchester Festival in 1836, when Malibran collapsed, dying nine days later. She also had a successful career in opera.

She died in 1865 in Surbiton, aged 65.
