13th February, 1873, in Kazan, Russia.

Adult life
He had little musical training before joining provincial opera in 1890. He sang in St. Petersburg 1894, then joined Manontov's private opera company in Moscow andsang at the Bolshoi 1899 - 1914. He sang Ivan in Rimsky-Korsakov's Maid of Pskov and Boris Godunov in Mussorksky's opera.

Milan debut 1901, New York debut 1907, London 1913. Created title role in Massenet's Don Quichotte.

He was regarded as the greatest singing actor of his day.

He died 12th April, 1938, in Paris aged 65.
