U3A Writing: Nursery Rhyme

John Leary brings a new take on an old rhyme.

Two young people went up a hill
to fetch a bucket of water.
No one believes that that's why they went,
everyone guesses another intent.
Whatever the reason one thing's for sure:
they wouldn't be able to go any more.
They'd have to find something different to say,
for someone has stolen the water away.
They've put it in bottles to sell in the shops,
they've piped it to farmers for use on their crops,
they've drained every stream, every pond, every lake,
and all the world knows it's an awful mistake.
So, what's the result of this terrible waste?
Jack is frustrated and Jill remains chaste!
