Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Jean De Reske, one of the greatest operatic tenors.

1850 in Warsaw.

Brother Eduard and sister Josephine were both singers.

Studied in Warsaw & Italy.

Adult life
Debuts in Turin and London as Don Giovanni 1874. Sang Robert le Diable in Madrid 1879. Sang in Massenet' s Herodiad in Paris 1884 and Le Cid 1885. Sang Faust in Paris 1887 with his brother as Mephistopheles. Covent Garden debut 1888, New York Met debut 1891.

Late in his career he sang such Wagner roles as Lohengrin,Tristan. He was regarded as one of the greatest operatic tenors.

He retired in 1902 and taught in Paris and Nice.

He died in Nice in 1925, aged 75.
