North American Dreaming: Cane Makers Plight

William Burkholder's poem highlights the plight of people on a blighted island.

Port Au Prince cane makers
Are unemployed
The charcoal forests of Haiti
Five star rum
And four dollar cokes
Too expensive now
Shell diving for quarters
Off seldom-visiting ships
Mostly gone now
Sunk, or drifting
Washington Bar
Closed or burnt out
From the riots there
Port Au Prince ,Haiti
Twenty five dollar annual income
lessened now by the cane makers loss
