North American Dreaming: Just A Peek Inside

There's a mystery in William Burkholder's poem which compels you to invent your own story.

The door opens
Calabash smoke wafting
Rising
To rough hewn rafters
Escaping into the night
Through holiday roof cracks
Rocker on wooden planks
Grinding
Creaking
Speaking of lost sleep
Loneliness’
Blemished window panes
Streaked and clouded
Keeping rain out anyway
Old water stains there
Before some old breach
Repaired with Monkey shit
Pipe dope did its job
Calabash smoke
Rising
Rocker stops
Back of grey head rises
"Who's there!?"
The door closes
