The Day Before Yesterday: 56 – My Husband Is Called Up

Gladys Schofield’s husband is called up to serve in the Air Force.

It was July, our little ducklings were about to hatch. Alan could travel faster on all fours, than we could on two legs. The letter we had dreaded for so long had arrived, my husband had gone to join his unit this morning early, not wanting us to see him off, as the Railway Station was crowded these days with sad, clinging people saying their farewells. He said he would rather do that in his own home.

Our little son was peering around the open doors calling for his dad. His face turned to where he thought he should be, in the hen run. How can you tell a baby it could be months before his daddy finished his course in the Air Force and was able to have a home visit. He had a special bond with his dad and looked very much like him. He was very hard to pacify, we had been up so early he eventually fell asleep and I went on my round feeding our feathered friends.

Keeping active was always my way of coping and I realised the ducks were due. Seven had managed to make it into this world without help already but the last little one was having a job to wriggle free. Mum was no good, her concern was for the ones already hatched and didn't seem to care that they stood twice as tall as the last lot she had reared and was already clucking and scratching for invisible tit-bits as I had not fed them yet. With a little help, the last one was free.

They looked so lovely in their yellow down, it's a pity they don't stay that way. After seeing everyone was cared for I went inside.
