North American Dreaming: Fall

William Burkholder's poem tells of the last grim fall of the condemned.

Hidden from prying hands,
Gaping mouths,
Calling out for justice
Doctrine of the damned
And unforgiving
While the sounds of
Rusty claw hammers
Strike the gallows nail
And death's craftsmen
Fashion hemp noose
The sand bags being the first victim
Of this short and subtle descent
Snapping and falling dead
Taught lines proving
Morbid efficiency
And the crowds
Begin to gather
