Adult Life
Maria Jeritza studied in Brno. Her opera debut was as Elsa in Lohengrin in Olmutz in 1910, and her Vienna debut was in 1912. She created the role of Adriadne in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, and she also sang the role of Empress in his Die Frau ohne Schatten.

She was the first Marietta in the USA in Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt at the New York Metropolitan in 1921 and was also the first American Jenufa, Turandot, and Helen in Strauss’s Die Egyptiche Helen.

She sang at Covent Garden in 1925 – 1926, where she made her debut as Tosca. Her radiant voice and personal beauty made her the company’s most glamorous star.

She died in Orange, New Jersey on 10 July, 1982, aged 95.
