Advent, if you know your Prayer Book,
Isn't just the gradual build-up
To the merry days of Christmas,
But a solemn, sharp reminder
Of the awesome Day of Judgment;
Christ shall come again in glory,
Reign supreme as King triumphant
End of time, and end of story!

So, beyond our preparations,
Materialistic, earth-bound things,
Let us glimpse the lowly Christ-child
High enthroned as King of Kings,
Judge of every idle word,
All our weak, uncaring ways ...
Then we'll see that Advent isn't
Ticking off the shopping days,
But thawing out our frozen hearts,
Sweeping clean a worthy place
For the new-born Prince of Peace,
Resplendent with his saving grace:
And Judgment Day we shall not dread,
Gathered round his manger bed.
