U3A Writing: Cat Eulogy

Maureen Foreman presents this eulogy to a beloved cat - an eulogy with a surprise ending.

Nineteen years he lived,
a full and courageous life.
Well loved, well fed, and admired,
but on Friday we buried our cat.

The son of a stray was Mikado,
the name we chose for him,
Ginger and white, so pretty, so proud,
but on Friday we buried our cat.

A hunter by nature, swift, sure,
a rabbit, mouse, or rat
were gifts he placed on our doorstep,
but on Friday we buried our cat.

He kept children at respectful distance
between him and means of escape,
The best seat on the couch was his for the taking,
but on Friday we buried our cat.

Many a scrap he had with the dogs
our neighbour let loose at night. J
His body was maimed and battle scarred I
and on Friday we buried our cat.

Put him down was the general advice
as he grew old, weary and sore.
He deserved one more chance we decided,
but on Friday we buried our cat.

I rang the Council to inform,
with deepest of deep regret,
that, at a quarter to ten on Friday,
I ran over our beautiful cat.
