U3A Writing: Fun Of The Fair

Maureen Foremanís poem recalls the childhood joy of going to the fair.

Remember, it was a great day when taken to the Fair.
Merry-Go-Rounds and Fairy Floss. Stalls,
Trying to get the Balls in the mouth of the Clowns.
Having shots to try to hit the birds popping up suddenly
or trying to land on a promised prize.
Throwing rubber rings at objects just that little bit too far away.
I was never lucky enough to win anything.
Ice-creams, Toffee Apples, Raspberry Cordial, Marshmallows, Coconut Ice,
Balloons, Pony Rides, Hayrides.
All to the accompaniment of fair ground music to lift the spirit,
and empty the pocket.
