Open Features: Nellie Melba

Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Nellie Melba, a singer valued for her beautiful tone and perfect technique.

19th. May 1861 in Richmond, Melbourne.

Studied piano, organ & theory, but sang in churches ansd local concerts.

Studied in Paris with Marchesi.

Adult life
Opera debut Brussels 1887 as Gilda in Rigolleto. Covent Garden debut as Lucia 1888, Paris 1889 as Ophelia. London triumphs date from her Juliette (Gounod) in 1889, sang regularly at Covent Garden till 1914. Milan debut 1893 as Lucia & New York Met same year. Also sang with Chicago Opera.
Her final operatic appearance was at Covent Garden in 1926 as Mimi as She was valued for her beautiful tone and perfect technique. Created D.B.E. 1918. She retired in 1926.
She died 23rd. February 1931 in Sydney aged 69.
