18th. November 1877 in Henndorf, Austria.

Adolescence
Studied medicine at Vienna University, then became a singer on Mahler's advice, studying at Vienna Conservatoire.

Adult life
Debut Bayreuth 1902 as Hagen. Vienna debut same year under Mahler in Ernani. Covent garden debut 1924 as Ochs in Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier; the role was written with him in mind. He sang it at the Vienna premiere in 1911.

He sang at the Vienna Opera for 30 years in Mozart) Wagner & Strauss. He created the role of Barak in Strauss' Die Frau ohne Schatten Vienna 1919. He was also a renowned Gurnemanz in Parsifal, Rocco in Fidelio & Sarastro in
Zauberflote.

He died 1st. December 1935 in Vienna aged 58.
