17th. June 1848 in Marseilles.

Adult life
Studied in Marseilles & at Paris Conservatoire. Debut Paris Opera 1868 in Les Hugenots. Sang in St. Petersburg, Cairo & Venice. Milan debut 1870, Covent Garden debutl873 in Un Ballo in Maschera, singing there till 1879. New York met debut 1873 in Aida. Sang in premiere of Massenet's, Herodiade 1881. Created roles of Iago in Verdi's Otello Milan 1887, also Falstaff 1893 & Leoncavallo's Tonio in Pagliacci 1892.

He appeared as actor for a short time, then settled in New York as a teacher in 1909.

He wrote four books on singing.

He died 22nd. October 1923 in New York aged 75.
