North American Dreaming: Not Hungry

William Burkholder's poem does no favours to meat-eaters.

Post Traumatic
Burgers burning
On the barbie
Can’t you smell
The burnt flesh
Garnished with closed eyes
And onion colored sheets
Pulled up over the head
With a side of
Muted screams
Into the pillow
Topped with
Mildew bread
Like old wet
Life jackets
In the bottom of a rusting burned out hulk.
Washing it down
With waves crashing memories
Salty
Ice cold
And unforgiving
Mixed and pummeled in
Skull cap
Forced until no room is left
Brain full to bursting
Soul forever thirsting
On second thought
I am not hungry
