Studied in New York with Rosalie Miller.

Adult life
Concert debut as soprano at Brooklyn Academy of Music in 1942. Opera debut same year as Lady Macbeth, also sang under Kleiber in Mexico City. Debut at New York met as Leonora (Ii Trovatore 1944). other roles there include Leonore (Fidelio), Donna Anna & Sieglinde. She made guest appearances at San Francisco, Chicago & Bayreuth (Sieglinde 1953).

Her voice changed to mezzo in 1955. Covent garden debut 1957 as Carmen, also sang Clytemnestra there. She sang in Vienna & other continental cities. She was noted for her warm & vibrant voice & fine musicianship. Debut as opera director Hamburg 1971.
