Open Features: Ludwig Schnorr

Peter Wintersgill tells of the great Wagner singer Ludwig Schnorr, who died at the age of 29.

2nd. July 1836 in Munich.

Studied in Dresden, Leipzig and Karlsruhe (with Devrient),

Adult life
Opera debut Karlsruhe 1858, was principal tenor there & at Dresden. Became
known as a great Wagner singer.

He created the role of Tristan (at Wagner's request) in Tristan & Isolde 1865 with his wife Malvina as Isolde. He died shortly after the premiere from the strain of the performance, Wagner praised his voice as "full soft and gleaming".

He died 21st July 1865 in Dresden aged only 29.
