Bonzer Words!: My Dad

...My dad from time to time suffered from unexpected sneezing fits for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, during dinner, he sneezed! Being a big man it was not just a little short sneeze, but a huge resounding sneeze that stopped everyone in their tracks!...

And that was the start of quite a performance, as Anne Mayne reveals.

When I was living in Toronto, Canada, 30 years ago, my parents visited from Australia. My father was a great big jovial fellow and a crowd of us went out to dinner at Ed's Warehouse in Toronto. It was a huge, very popular restaurant and was absolutely packed that Saturday evening.

My dad from time to time suffered from unexpected sneezing fits for no apparent reason. Unfortunately, during dinner, he sneezed! Being a big man it was not just a little short sneeze, but a huge resounding sneeze that stopped everyone in their tracks!

Then he sneezed again, and everyone started to stare. Once more, he sneezed, and to our amazement, the whole restaurant came to a standstill—diners, waiters, barmen—all stopped to watch and count out loud! Three, four, five, six . . . up to twenty one giant, enormous, explosive sneezes!

Of course he held a handkerchief up to his face, but by this time, his eyes were watering and tears were streaming down his cheeks. At last, it seemed he had stopped, and unsteadily, exhausted from his sneezing efforts, he got to his feet.

Everyone was watching, and he very ceremoniously bowed to everyone on every side, and they all roared with laughter, and clapped and cheered!! That was my dad!
