U3A Writing: Learning To Swim

Joan Miles recalls with embarrassment her attempts to learn to swim.

We travelled on the train from North Essendon Primary School to the Essendon Baths. My mother couldn't afford a bathing costume for me so I came out of the change rooms resplendent in singlet and panties.

Oh, the embarrassment of it all. How could I then concentrate on the instructions?

Never mind about blowing bubbles. I just wanted to drown myself. I made sure when we hung onto the bar to kick that my legs were really low in the water to hide my outfit. I never did learn to swim properly after that dreadful start.

I still can't float. My legs just sink immediately, thanks, I think, to my early training.
