Peter Wintersgill outlines the career of Amy Shuard who made her operatic debut in Johannesburg.

Adult life
Opera debut Johannesburg 1949 as Aida. She sang at Sadlers Wells 1949 - 55, and Covent Garden 1954 till her death, singing Katyana Kabanova, Carmen, Eboli, Tatyana, Tosca, Turandot,Elektra,Santuzza & Aida. She later sang Wagner roles, and was the first English soprano to sing Brunnhilde at Covent Garden, and Isolde at Geneva. Created C.B.E. 1966.

She died 18th April 1975 in London aged 50.
