Poetry Pleases: The Vine At Night

Caroline Glyn's poem conveys the mystery and menace of a nighttime tree.

Skeletons straggling across the sky
Like witches, cloaks trailing, on creeping snakes,
And broomsticks. Leaves darkened, patchy,
Pale slashes in moonlight flakes.

No bright green clustered leaves, merry in the sunlight,
Sparkling like leaves cut in emerald
Against a wall, gleaming white.
But now, mysterious, dark, cold.
