U3A Writing: Aftermath

Mick Harkin portrays in words the aftermath of a raging blaze.

Smouldering tree stumps burn at night,
create an eerie, flickering light.
Orange flames lick warm night air,
sparks from trees shower everywhere.

Old dead tree comes crashing down,
thunderous bang as it hits the ground.
Coals and debris flying free,
dust and ashes envelop me!

In the light of early morn,
wandering cattle, dazed, forlorn.
Black and ashen panorama,
scene of recent horrid drama!

Bloated carcases smoky black,
Lie along the winding track.
Land of hell not of heaven,
Cruel death, no mercy given!
